Classes

Alterations and Repairs Classes
It would be ideal if you have basic sewing skills and have used a machine before, but if you are new to sewing then this class is still suitable.
The Class structure is very flexible and is planned around what you want to learn. You let me know in advance what items you have that need attention and that you wish to bring to the Class.
In addition to what you bring, the most common alterations will be covered, which are: all types of hem and taking in or out of women’s trousers. Men’s suit trousers are taken out using the center back seam.
The most frequent repairs are usually due to tears or holes and different ways of dealing with these are covered. The obvious way is to make the repair as invisible as possible but there is a trend towards making a feature of the repair using various techniques including embroidery.
Instruction leaflets which include valuable hints and tips will be sent to you after the Class by email.

Beginners Classes
This Class is suitable for complete beginners or someone has done only a little sewing. All the fabric and haberdashery is provided but you should bring your machine and sewing equipment. There are machines and equipment available for use in class if you can’t bring your own.
The Beginners course is 4 weeks on Tuesday evenings 7.00 to 9.00 p.m. Cost £80. Hot drinks and biscuits provided.
You will learn:
-
Basic use of a sewing machine.
-
How to make a very simple pattern.
-
Zip insertion.
-
How to make straps and pockets (on bag and apron).
-
Bias binding, hemming and basic use of the overlocker.
You have the choice of making various useful items: a small zipped purse or a shopper, an apron, coasters or glasses case. You should have time to complete several of these items. The instructions for making the items will be emailed to you. Classes are kept small and there is always a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Intermediate Classes
This class is for those who have a basic use of the sewing machine: those who have already done quite a lot of sewing and those who are much less confident. Classes are small so that you will get lots of individual attention. You should bring your machine and sewing equipment, although machines and equipment can be made available for use in class if you can’t bring your own.
The Intermediate Class is 4 weeks on Thursday evenings, 7.30 to 9.30 p.m. Cost £72. Hot drinks and biscuits provided.
You bring your own project and can make whatever you want, clothes, bags, or perhaps soft furnishings such as cushion covers . If you have more basic sewing skills then I am happy to suggest easier projects to get you started. An intermediate class works very well as it is enjoyable to exchange ideas with other members of the group. Techniques are regularly demonstrated and taught as required.

Overlocker
LOSE YOUR FEAR OF THE OVERLOCKER
This Class is so called as when you first get an Overlocker, using it can seem very daunting. The ‘threading up’ is complex, there are multiple possible adjustments to make and the manual can seem completely incomprehensible. This Class will simplify all these issues and give you confidence in getting the most out of your machine.
The Class is 3 ½ hrs. Tea coffee, cake. £45. 9.30 to 1pm.
You only need to bring your overlocker and manual and your basic sewing kit as everything else is provided.
The Class will begin with a brief introduction as to the main uses of the overlocker and how it functions. We will then practice threading and try out some basic stitches. This will include guidance on how to understand the manual.
You can have some practice threading the
machine and will be given some hints and
tips to help with this. You can then try out
some basic stitches and learn how to
negotiate overlocking around strong curves.
During refreshments you can choose some fabric and then make a cover for your overlocker or sewing machine using the overlocker. The cover has internal and external corners and there will be
instruction on how to overlock in these
areas. There will be an opportunity to try out some of the other stitches.
After this class you will go home feeling confident that in future you will be able to set up your overlocker yourself and deal with any adjustments that may be necessary to get good results.

Pop-up Beginners Tasters Class
The class is for total beginners or those with little experience. The Classes are small and you get plenty of individual help.
I take you through basic use of the sewing machine, and some of the different threads and needles and machine feet that you might want to use. (I have leaflets on all these things which I email to you after the class as I am aware it is hard to remember everything).
That doesn’t take that long so then you would then be able to make a little lined zipped purse or a shopper or something similar and should be able to complete it in the time available.
No equipment or fabric is required but you are welcome to bring your own. I have Bernina machines for use in the Classes but if you have a machine then most people want to bring theirs.
On a Saturday 9.30 a.m. to 1p.m. with refreshments provided.
Cost £45
